Today something small happened.

But for me, it was big.

I was alone in the cafeteria.

After my appointment.

With my crutch.

With my tray.

With coffee and pastries.

And I was struggling.

Not dramatically.

Just visibly.

A woman stood behind me.

She said nothing about my pain.

She asked nothing about my story.

She simply took my tray.

“Do you need to go to the register?”

Yes.

She placed it there.

I took my rolls.

And then it happened again.

The lady at the register came to me herself.

“It’s alright, I’ll help you.”

She brought everything to my table.

A table specially meant for people who have difficulty walking.

She followed me there.

No pity.

No grand gesture.

Just respect.

Two women.

From UZ Gent.

One a visitor.

One working both kitchen and register.

Without me asking.

Without me explaining anything.

That is dignity.

That is humanity.

And today, I want to name it.

“Today I witnessed respect in motion.”
